What's New

Hello! You've reached the official start of my new Web site, one that promises to grow in size considerably. It first appeared on a limited basis as part of my university Web presentation, January 3, 2002.

One of my goals is to balance easy navigation against quick loading times. Please let me know if you find anything confusing or difficult to use on this site. Suggestions are always welcome.

Like most Web sites, this one is continually under construction. I'll be adding new material pretty much on a weekly basis, so please check back from time to time! The list below indicates the portions that have been added most recently:

What's Done?

Trails and Grasslands is a work in progress. The following sections are "done," at least in the sense of a first draft.

  • April 21, 2002: First "official" posting to my new domain name: www.trailsandgrasslands.org

  • June 20, 2002: Grasslands section completed

  • June 27, 2002: Lewis and Clark section completed

  • July 12, 2002: greatly expanded the Books and Videos section; split it into separate Literature, Field Guides, Movies and Shows, and Audio Cassettes sections

  • July 15, 2002: finished up the Audio Cassettes section; footnoted the Books & Videos photo; removed some redundant Javascript elsewhere

  • July 20, 2002: added another video to the Movies and Shows section

  • August 28, 2002: Pony Express section completed

  • August 31, 2002: set up the Side Trips section

  • September 14, 2002: the huge South Dakota section in Side Trips is complete!

  • September 15, 2002: added local weather button to every location (customized National Weather Service forecast); more proofreading throughout

  • September 19, 2002: added a lot of new reports to the Books & Videos section

  • September 21, 2002: started the Oddments section — this should grow quite a bit over the next week or so

  • December 26, 2002: after a too-lengthy break to remodel my living room and dining room, I'm back in harness here; fixed all pages to display identically in Netscape, Mozilla and even inferior browsers like Microsoft's Internet Explorer; repaired several broken links

  • January 11, 2003: posted A Tale of the Great Plains and a few Itineraries; broke up the Art of Packing Food section

  • April 18, 2003: moved to a new server, hosted by MicroCom in Kansas City; the old GoDaddy server was pulling pranks on me with hidden charges (recall I support this noncommercial site completely out of my own pocket, with no advertising to annoy you and at no charge to visitors); please let me know if you experience any problems since the move

  • July 4, 2003: posted the Kiowa National Grassland section

  • July 24, 2005: added Sgt. Floyd Monument, Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fischers Lilly Park; put pulldown menu system in Javascript common file; replaced some formatting with cascading style sheets

  • July 25, 2005: updated the Outdoor Recipes section

  • More coming soon!

I'd love to hear from you if you have any suggestions or corrections to report. And let me know what you think about the layout; is there anything I could do to make this Web site more useful or easier to follow? Send me an e-mail if you have any ideas.
