The picture above shows some of my favorite books, popped down from my living room shelf especially for this photo. Well actually, the Willa Cather book is my girlfriend's; she's a major fan of this noted Nebraska author. Remember, I like to show you these things from my own collection, simply because I want you to be aware of them. In no way should it be construed that I'm trying to take credit for someone else's work (hence the footnote giving full bibliographic details) or trying to promote some sort of sales venture. This Web site, from start to finish, is non-commercial — I only point you toward various resources as a convenience.

When I travel, my minivan becomes a bookmobile. I pack it full of all sorts of gazetteers, field guides and local history books. The purpose of this section, then, is to alert you to some of the neatest items from my own personal library. I bought most of these out West while on trips, but picked up a few locally. The links in each of the sub-sections (see the mini-menu above) will give you more information on them, as well as suggest how to procure them for yourself.

In the first paragraphs of each category I devote a few words to several of the items I consider to be outstanding. Then there are links to all of the ones I believe are worthy of your consideration.

You'll notice that the mini-menu above has options devoted to Movies and Shows (available on video tape), and Audio Cassettes featuring readings from notable books about the Great Plains. There are some wonderful things out there, and I've started a pretty good multimedia collection now. I like the videos for viewing during the winter, when I'm planning spring trips to the prairie. And the audio tapes are great to fall asleep to at night, or for taking along on the trip. On particularly dreary stretches (like I-80 or I-90) it's fun to listen to a professional actor recreate scenes from the West.

I've listed some general links below to various online mail order houses. Some of them can supply books, while others also carry video tapes as well. I'll try to keep you posted on where you can obtain the various things I mention.

Everyone knows about Barnes and Noble or Amazon, but I wonder how many people ever take the time to check out university offerings. In particular, the University of Nebraska Press is a world renown publisher of many books related to western lore, and their prices are unbeatable. My suggestion is always to look for university or extension service resources first, and then as a last ditch effort try the commercial houses like Amazon.

And now, you can proceed to the next section (Literature) by clicking the big blue arrow below, or else you can jump ahead to a particular category out of order by using the mini-menu at the top.
